Understanding cauda equina syndrome in Ireland: A medical emergency
2 minute read
What is Cauda Equina Syndrome?
Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) is a serious medical condition where the nerve roots in the lumbar spine become compressed. This rare, but critical, condition can lead to severe consequences, including paralysis and incontinence if not promptly treated. Immediate medical intervention is often necessary to prevent permanent damage.
What are the symptoms of Cauda Equina Syndrome?
Spinal Injuries Ireland outlines several symptoms indicative of Cauda Equina Syndrome in the acronym, SPINE.
S – Saddle Anaesthesia
Weakness, tingling or numbness in your ‘saddle region’ or the parts of your body that would touch the saddle if you were sitting on a horse – the upper inner thighs, groin, buttocks and genitals.
P – Pain
Pain, weakness, tingling or numbness in your lower back, backs of thighs, lower legs and feet.
I – Incontinence
Loss of control, urgency or finding it hard to urinate or defecate.
N – Numbness
Numbness in your lower back, backs of thighs, lower legs and feet.
E – Emergency
Any of these can be a warning sign of Cauda Equina Syndrome. If you start to experience any of these symptoms, seek urgent medical attention.
What can cause Cauda Equina Syndrome?
CES can result from a variety of factors, including:
- Herniated discs.
- Spinal tumors.
- Infections.
- Inflammation.
- Spinal fractures.
- Impact injuries.
- Spinal canal narrowing.
This list is not exhaustive, and any concerns should be immediately addressed by a healthcare professional.
The consequences of misdiagnosis or delayed treatment
Misdiagnosis or delayed treatment of CES can result in severe, lifelong consequences for the patient. In such cases, the individual may be entitled to compensation, especially if the medical professionals failed to recognise the symptoms of this serious condition.
