Recent revelations about serious spinal surgical incidents at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Temple Street in Dublin have caused major concern both within the medical community and beyond.
An internal review has identified “serious spinal surgical incidents,” prompting an external review by a UK expert. These incidents have raised concerns about patient safety, especially for children with spina bifida who have undergone complex spinal surgeries at the hospital.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has commissioned an external review focusing on the clinical care provided by an individual consultant at Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street. This consultant is currently not conducting surgeries and a referral has been made to the Medical Council. The review stems from concerns about poor surgical outcomes, the use of unauthorised implantable devices and a specific spinal surgical technique.
In 2022, concerns were raised about a small number of children with spina bifida who had spinal surgery at the hospital. These concerns related to poor outcomes and a high incidence of post-operative complications and infections. Sadly, one child has since died and several others have suffered significant post-operative complications according to the HSE.
